Madagascar's unique biodiversity
Madagascar sits off the east coast of Africa, but ecologically it belongs to a world of its own. The island broke away from other landmasses so long ago that its plants and animals evolved in near-total isolation, producing an extraordinary number of endemic species, those found nowhere else on the planet. For anyone working with Mora Mora in the island's north-west, that uniqueness is not an abstraction; it is the daily backdrop to the work.
Lemurs, the island's signature
Lemurs are Madagascar's most famous residents, and with good reason. More than a hundred species have been identified, living everywhere from rainforest to dry woodland and wetland. The range of size alone is striking: Madame Berthe's mouse lemur weighs barely thirty grams, while the indri reaches around nine kilograms and is known for haunting, song-like calls that carry through the canopy. The aye-aye, meanwhile, uses an unusually long, thin middle finger to tap for and hook out grubs. Lokobe National Park, close to Nosy Be, is one of the more accessible places to see lemurs in their natural forest.
Because lemurs exist nowhere else, their survival is bound tightly to the health of Madagascar's forests. What happens to the trees happens to them.
Chameleons, in miniature and at scale
Chameleons are a second Malagasy speciality. The island is home to more than sixty species, a sizeable share of the world's total, from tiny leaf-litter dwellers to larger, slow-moving giants. Their celebrated colour changes are less about camouflage than communication and temperature control, a signal of mood and readiness as much as a way to blend in. Some of the smallest species are barely the length of a fingernail, a reminder of just how much variety the island packs into a single family.
The fossa, the island's top predator
The fossa confounds first impressions. Cat-like in movement but more closely related to the mongoose family, it is a powerful, agile hunter whose body is built for the chase: long, muscular hind legs and a long tail give it the balance to pursue lemurs through the forest canopy. It is elusive and solitary, active by both day and night, and rarely glimpsed in the wild.
Less famous than the animals it hunts, the fossa is no less important. By keeping prey populations in check it holds the wider ecosystem in balance, and it illustrates better than almost any other animal how Madagascar's isolation produced forms found nowhere else.
Tenrecs, and the art of filling a gap
The tenrec looks a great deal like a hedgehog but belongs to an entirely different family, having evolved to fill roles held by hedgehogs and shrews elsewhere in the world. Tenrecs are remarkably adaptable, turning up in rainforest, grassland and even arid country, and they come in a wide array of colours, patterns and sizes, many carrying sharp spines that deter predators. They are also notably vocal, producing everything from loud calls to soft chirps and clicks, which is unusual among mammals of their size.
An experiment still being catalogued
The list runs on, from brilliantly coloured day geckos to an array of frogs and invertebrates that scientists are still working through, but the theme holds: this is a place where evolution ran its own experiment. Lemurs, fossa and tenrecs each occupy a different niche, yet all are products of the same long isolation. It is a reminder that biodiversity is not spread evenly across the world. Some places hold irreplaceable concentrations of it, and Madagascar is one of them.
That richness is also fragile. Habitat loss and pressure on the island's forests threaten species that, once gone, are gone globally rather than merely locally. There is no population elsewhere to draw on, and no second chance.
This is why grounded, community-based conservation matters so much here. Much of Madagascar's endemic life depends on forest that people also rely on for fuel, food and income, so protecting it means working with the communities who live alongside it rather than around them. That is the approach Mora Mora takes in the north-west, and it is slow, practical work: forest monitoring, habitat restoration, environmental education, and supporting livelihoods that do not depend on clearing more land.
